Quick service and great meal- Arrived at 5:45pm, as the place was filling up. I asked for a rush service as need to catch a flight. Staff supported. Great meal for the family. Nice and spicy chips/sauce. The carnitas were excellent. Nice value. Would recommend.

If you're a fan of MexUtahn food, then you'll love this place. Smothered burritos are their primary business, and business is good. There are a couple of things that elevate this place above the other "La ______" places in town that also specialize in this most Utah of all Mexi foods. 1- They offer their burritos smothered with red (Colorado) or green (verde) chile. 2- There is some actual heat and spice involved in their food and, more importantly, in their salsa. For these two reasons, La Hacienda gets 3 stars, whereas most of the competitors are 1-2 star joints. The service here is good and the prices are right where they should be. Overall, it's not a bad place to grab a quick lunch. Especially if you don't want to wait in line for authentic Mexican food at one of the places down the street.

Food is good and plentiful. Although service is slow most time and bus staff speaks minimal english when asking for something. All of staff is friendly and caring though. Will continue to return for the food and friendliness.

Excellent, authentic Mexican food! No shortcuts here - truly tastes homemade. Great staff, very polite and fast. The chile relleno, the BEANS, the chimichanga...seriously, get the chimichanga. And the beans are the second best only behind my wife's. Bomb food.

My visit to La Hacienda was terrible from the beginning. When we walked in the first thing I noticed was how unclean it was. When we were seated we noticed that the chairs and booths were torn and falling apart. When handed the menus it got worse. The menus were falling apart and had either sticky spots or crusty parts on them. Then the waiter and the other employees who were just sitting around did not have a clue on what professionalism is or how to give proper service! Our waiter, every single time he returned to our table he smelled worse and worse of cigarette smoke. Half way through us eating food that tasted like it came out of a frozen bag, all we could smell was his and another employees cigarette smell. We could not get out of there fast enough. The salsa taste very odd, you had to pay for refills on chips, the presentation of the food was extremely sloppy and I am surprise my family didn't get sick from the food. Just to add a personal experience, one of the waiters made me feel so uncomfortable. All he did when he was inside the restaurant was stare at me and drink whatever he had in his cup. Over all this restaurant experience was horrendous. I've had better service at a Burger King.

Best New Mexican food I've had outside of new Mexico! I've been living in NYC and was in salt lake city, and really studied the Mexican food options. La hacienda met all my expectations. Great service, spot on food, and just enough spice, all with a family feel. I would def come back. I had the green chili stew, taco, chili relleno combo! Everything was great. Margarita and chips and salsa were just what I wanted. Love this place!

Dirty service napkins, broken chip bowls, marginally cold non-iced beverages, $.50 for refills on chips, watery salsa, forgetful service. Yeah, I guess that about covers it. Sorry, La Hacienda. The sun has set on this old ranch.

I got the fired tilapia since it's my favorite fish. I was surprised that they actually had it the way I would like it to be. Fresh and well cooked. It was crispy and it tastes really good. They serving size was big and price is just about right. The only thing that wasn't that good was not all the servers can speak English. But it was ok cause they seemed friendly

What happened to my favorite Mexican restaurant ? I don't know if it was a new cook or an off Sunday night. Was bragging to our dining companions from California, this place served up tasty food. My chile verde burrito seriously had one cube of pork on top and it as the size of a dice. The inside was void of any meat, just soupy looking. The quesadilla de masa was supposed to have ground beef and again, very little meat and a gross cheese filling. Even the shell was not good. I will go back, but might try the location out in Draper instead of the one on Redwood Road. Service leaves a lot to be desired.

Very good. I have eaten Mexican food all over the country and this meal was as good as they come. Had smothered chicken burrito with tomatillo salsa and tortilla was thick and soft. Salsa was spicy and flavorful. Chips were fresh and well seasoned.

I was disappointed with my meal here. I ordered the shrimp quesadillas, and they weren't made of tortillas like most quesadillas I've had before (but maybe this is more authentic? I don't know) - instead it was a thick fried breading I did not really enjoy because there wasn't much cheese inside of it, so most of the breading was dry. The menu picture made it look as though there was some sort of sauce on top which was not there. I did enjoy the chips and salsa, rice and beans. Unfortunately my water was empty most of the meal so no big points for service either.

Descent food but not a fan of sub par ingredients aLways prefer fresh over canned and unfortunately this place uses to much canned. No wow factor.

I had heard a lot of good things about La Hacienda so I gave them a try for lunch. This being my first time I wanted to try a couple things so I opted to order a combo off the dinner menu. I got a chile verde burrito and a chicken chimi. Service was ok the waitress seemed distracted and was less than attentive. Food came out pretty quick, for the price I paid it did not look like much. The burrito was basically a rolled up tortilla with verde on top, it did have a little bit of beans inside but very little, verde was ok but I have had better. The chimi was good, a bit small but well made with white meat chicken. As I recall the salsa was on the bland side. Based on this experience I will not be rushing back anytime soon, I may give them one more try but I know I can find better elsewhere at a more reasonable price.

Service is horrible. After being seated we weren't acknowledged for about 10 mins and they finally bring chips. After another 5 mins the server comes and takes our order and serves is water. Once our order was placed we waited 30 mins and by this time I was so frustrated and annoyed that the food was taking this long and no one even bothered to come back and fill out water glasses. I grew so inpatient I just asked for our food to go and that still took an additional few minutes. I'll finish by saying this isn't the first time the service has been horrible. I recommend calling in the order and eating at home. The food is good but the service is terrible.

Best Mexican food in salt lake. This is my family's favorite restaurant in the valley. Keep up the great work. It's was busy on Friday night but well worth the wait. The fajitas were great and my wife loves the chicken soft tacos. The Chile Verde chimichanga is my new favorite.

This place was, as rated, A-OK. Coming from So Cal, we honestly expected sup-par Mexican food but this place was OK. I had the Chile Verde Enchiladas and I got white cheese enchiladas with Chile Verde sauce and 4 little pieces of pork thrown on top. Not quite top-notch. Mom had a bean and cheese burrito and thought it was good. The boy had the Pork Adobado tacos and thought they were ok. The chips were interesting in that they were dusted with chili powder(?). Home made and tasty....and then 50 cents extra for a refill. Our server was annoyed, at best. Not the greatest service. 3 stars seems a bit high for our experience.

hmmm, not sure what happened to my earlier review so... There is a pair of these restaurants each run by a brother using their mother's recipes. This is the primary restaurant and surprising the less busy of the two. However there's always a few regulars that seem to be there each time I go there, which is a good sign in my book. I can see why with wi-fi and games on the TVs and oh the food. I tend to stick to the more gringo side of the menu so far just cause it fills my need for chimichanga and large quantities of food. One of my favorite is the chicken because it's tender and has bits of potato in it. They also offer a choice of whole beans and refried, both are very tasty. Chips and salsa are decent but I don't quite understand why they charge after the first bowl but don't let that dissuade you from trying this place. This location has a slight edge on the other since "mama" is usually around to make sure it's done right. Also during the summer, they do a brisk business selling bunches of dried chilies.

First impression - this place is a disgrace to mexican restaurants. I asked the waitress if we could get some queso and she looked at me like I had just hit a child in the face with a shovel. What kind of Mexican restaurant doesn't have queso? That's like an Italian restaurant not having pasta. Next impression - they charge $0.50 for chip refills. They charge for refills on little nug-sized chip bowls. Service was horrible. Additionally, as I write this the next morning, my stomach feels like it got hit by a train. Sorry to write such a terrible review, but the experience really was terrible.

  • David G.

First impression walking in: There is a lot of kitch on every open surface. On the wall of every booth is a sign that reads "Chips Refil, 50 cents". Really? And the bowls are small. I ordered beef fajitas with flour tortillas and an iced tea. At least the drink came in a huge cup. The fajitas were SOOO SALTY that I almost couldn't eat it. And they gave me two flour tortillas. Really, 2? At least the server asked if I wanted more tortillas. There were a few regulars around, so I could have missed something. Multiple regulars is a good sign.

This is honestly one of the best mexican food places there is! I absolutely love the flavor. The only thing I don't like is they way they have it set up to wait. That is kinda a pain, but the food is worth it!

This is one of the Mexican restaurants I frequent the most. The food is authentic and delicious (has to be the "right" items on the menu) and the portions are good. With it's casual and friendly atmosphere, the servers are not the most attentive, however.

My family discovered this restaurant while they were in their first location. From that time on we have been coming here ever chance we get. The owner & her family are wonderful people who recognize their customers & always ask how your meal was, we never have any complaints! Their complimentary chips & salsa are very tasty & while you're sitting in to eat, you will always hear people coming in to get an order or two of them, along with food to go. As the description of the restaurant explains, they serve Mexican food & Smothered Burritos. My favorite is the 2 beef chimichangas enchilada style- It comes with rice, beans & a side of lettuce & tomatoes for $10! Everything is so tasty & flavorful! I can NEVER finish it all, so I always have a second meal for the next day! If you love Mexican food, I highly recommend this restaurant! The Staff is great, very personable & quick to get your food out! Also I'm not Mexican, nor have I been to Mexico, but I don't see the big deal with people pointing out their decor? I think it's fine for their restaurant. Plus as long as the food & service is great, who cares about decor?! Keep doing what your doing, La Hacienda, you've made a wonderful restaurant that makes a lot of people happy :-)

In the Redwood Rd area between the airport and 3500 South, this is the best sit-down Mexican restaurant. I work nearby and and have tried them all. I always go during the lunch hour. It can get busy so its best to go at 11:30 am or after 12:30 pm. The daily specials are the best deal -- entre', rice, beans and a drink for $6.50 plus taxes and tip. The ships and salsa are also good.

Environment is open and well lit. The staff seem to be hesitant to attend to customers walking in and the service seems slower than an average restaurant. The food was mediocre at best. I had to gag the last bite down. On my enchiladas the cheese was chunky and extremely greasy with burns around the edges. The refried beans are the lightest and smoothest I've ever seen! Are they even beans? I didnt dare eat them. For the prices I would expect better, more authentic mexican food. It seems thrown together with cheap ingredients and hardly authentic. EXTREMELY greasy food with poor service. I wouldn't come again personally.

This place is mighty tasty! We went there on Saturday about 3 for a late lunch and it was pretty packed. They have plants everywhere and big bright windows so the decor was well received. The salsa was OK, I personally think La Puente's is better. The food though, is great! I had the cheese enchilada and chili relleno combo. The enchilada sauce was very well flavored and the chili relleno was probably the best I've ever had! We finished our meal with sopapillas and they were amazing! They came four small triangles to a basket and were seasoned with cinnamon and sugar like a churro. They provided honey butter to put on top and that just added to their amazingness. I'll be back here for sure!

I initially got this confused with another place in the same complex and they didn't deserve that kind of error, so I'm rectifying it now (and apologies to the business owners for my error). While I called the other place a low-grade La Frontera, this would be more of a high grade La Frontera. This place is always packed, but even still, the wait is never bad and the server was nothing short of fantastic. The lunch menu was very shallow, but I'm in favor of that at lunch, so they can focus on doing fewer things better and get the plates out of the kitchen and onto the tables. It's not perfect; they could use a much better drink menu and the portion size, which varied widely between us all at the table, could definitely use a bit of help, but the flavors were all pretty much on point and everything actually tasted fresh. The chips and salsa tasted a lot like they were made there, rather than out of a can. The chile relleno, in particular, contained a very nice level of spiciness that was somewhat surprising and very welcome. The enchilada sauce was quite good as well, though the refrieds and rice, by themselves, were a touch bland. In conjunction with the other stuff on the plate, however, they made a nice accompaniment. The decor inside is really nice and this place has retained its newness, even some years removed. The decoration is quite tasteful and everyone there was very friendly. All in all, this is a bit removed for me to go to regularly, but I certainly won't shy away from it again and if you're wondering what this whole smothered burrito craze is, this would be an excellent place to start.

Love this place. It's busy so that's always a sign of a good Mexican restaurant. Prices are reasonable and everything I have tries on the menu is excellent. Try the carnitas burrito!

Been coming here for years and it's my first check in! I love this place for 2 reasons... One, it's close to my house. So let's say I have a smothered burrito withdrawal, or low taco syndrome, I can get emergency help in like 3 min! Second, let's be honest, it's the food that keeps this fat guy coming back! Chile Verde is outstanding. They could cover a shoe with this stuff and I would eat it. The tortilla soup is great any day of the week, but have a cold and it becomes AWESOME! Clears the sinuses out so well I can now smell colors! If your thinking lunch time... Prepare to wait a bit. Gets crazy crowded at lunch, but worth the wait. Great service, great food and they serve tequila... Need I say more.

Awesome food and service at this price point and beyond. We eat at lots of mexican food places and this place is authentic. I don't have time to write a detailed review but if you know real mexican food not that americanized stuff then this is the place for you. Enjoy. :)

This is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in town. The salsa that comes with the chips are always fresh, and slightly different (depending on who made them that day I assume.) For starter I like their small nachos with beef, and a couple times I've tried their chicken tortilla soup, which was delicious, too. For entree I like their carnitas. The pork is cooked well - tender and seasoned nicely. A couple friends of mine love the smothered burritos and other seafood dishes. The fried ice-cream is probably my favorite dessert from La Hacienda. They coat the vanilla ice-cream with a layer of coconut and some sort of a crunchy cereal (?) and it's truly tasty. I like mine with caramel sauce on top. The staff is friendly and helpful, but service can sometimes be spotty depends on who you get. But all and all I love it here.

This experience I'm going to write happened in the spring of 2013. I now have the courage to share. This used to be one of my favorite Mexican restaurants. It has seafood menu items, even oysters, which you don't see in other Mexican restaurants much. Great food. However, I had a horrible experience last time I was there. The usual madam host wasn't present. A man in baggy basketball gear, hiphop hat, and baggy shorts (not professional) was in and out of the kitchen, talking to people like he owns the place. The service was slow as usual, but I was used to it. A familiar server seemed always distracted. My date ordered a Margarita. It's in a small glass. He took a few sips and tells me it's all Margarita mix and no tequila. I took a few sips an agreed. I don't usually drink because I get bad reactions from alcohol. I didn't detect any sign of alcohol in the glass. So we called over our server and had them made another one. This time, there is definitely tequila in it. Significant difference in the taste. It shows that they use Patron as they advertize. At the end of the meal, we were charged for TWO Margaritas. Two. We complained that they can't charge us for the first one because there wasn't tequila in it. They deny that they forgot to put tequila in the first one, and because we consumed almost half of it, they're going to charge for two. Not only they wouldn't admit their mistake of serving just Margarita mix, they basically accused us for trying to scam an extra glass of Margarita. That was it. We had enough. We paid and left. I have never been disrespected this much at a restaurant. If the usual host/manager, who recognizes us as regulars, was there, the outcome would have been very different. I don't know if the management changed or she happened not to be there that day, but we won't know because we are not going back there ever again.

My Dad and I were stopping for a quick lunch next door when we saw La Hacienda and decided to try it out instead. Good decision. We told the waiter we were in a hurry, and he was very accommodating. I ordered the carnitas burrito, and the carnitas is exceptional. Possibly even the best I've tried (and not too spicy). Plus, the burrito was huge so I only ate half and the other half was just as good re-heated the next day. I'm usually pretty take-it or leave-it about rice and beans at Mexican restaurants but theirs was actually okay. It was the daily special so my meal only cost $7 including a drink. The only bummer is that they charge you for chip refills (but the salsa was quite good). I would definitely eat there again.

  • Bud H.

This place does most things well. The chips and salsa are great. The salsa has a great flavor with a decent amount of spice. The chips are home made, light and crispy, and usually served warm. I absolutely love the Carnitas. It's pretty much my go-to dish whenever I go here. The pork is perfectly seasoned, juicy, and perfect when you add the jalepenos that come on the side. The beans and rice are definitely above average here too. All in all, a pretty tasty Mexican joint.

La Hacienda offers good traditional Mexican food in a relaxed environment. The restaurant is in a new strip mall on the west side and is nice inside. Staff is friendly and prompt. I ordered beef enchiladas and a strawberry margarita. The enchiladas and rice and beans were good but not very spicy. I prefer spicy Mexican food. I love the burn! Overall a nice restaurant, though not exceptional it was still good. I've had better.

La Hacienda is nice. The service was good and fast. Food was tasty but I prefer a bit more authentic...this is the more Americanized-everything covered in melted cheese Mexican food. Prices are around 7 bucks per plates. Fresh tortilla chips and salsa on every table with refill for 50 cents. I had a smothered green burrito hold the cheese and it was totally decent. This won't be a go to place for me but I would recommend it for friends with more American-Mexican taste.

My absolute favorite Mexican restaurant in Salt Lake! Most everything is homemade and just delicious! Our favorite is the small combination plate with Tostadas de Carnitas and a smothered burrito (green or red). We have never been disappointed and feel this place beats any other Mexican place in town for the food, service and overall value! Esther and her family are so very kind and gracious and we always feel right at home! A+++

I have a ton of family in SLC and had not been to visit in 5 years. My cousin took me here telling me it was one her and her son's favorite places. I must say the food was AWESOME I had a smothered chicken chimichanga with rice and beans. Soo good. I would say the only down side is having to pay 50 cents every time you want more chips. I have never heard to a Mexican restaurant doing this. But over all the food was delish and I would recommend it to a friend.

My husband and I had a great experience here. We were seated right away and our server was fantastic. The manager (I'm guessing) asked us how our experience was going which was a nice gesture, he even gave us a free refill on chips and salsa; which was great because the plaque on each table that explains all chips and salsa refills are 50 cents is a turn-off. Our food was great, we got a combo platter with a smothered burrito, taco and a quesadilla. I loved the tortillas because they were thick, and the quesadilla was unlike any I've had... almost like a hot pocket... but soooo much better. Chicken was tender and flavorful. The refried beans were spicy, which was a pleasant surprise because I was expecting the all-too-common bland flavor most mexican restaurants have. My husband got the chile verde and he LOVED it. We both ordered fountain drinks and our waiter was quick to refill them. When our bill arrived we were stoked that the total was $22. For all the food we got, and the quality, we felt like it was a steal.

La Hacienda is a premier Mexican restaurant. Not well-known for many years, its popularity is now catching on, as they have moved this facility across RW Road to a new building and recently opened a 2nd new facility on 12300 So. Food is authentic, even down to the chips and salsa, all home made. Wide variety of choices, cooked to perfection. Better yet, the business is family owned and operated and the charm of their hosting is delightful.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
